"Separated from the Herd" depicts a
dramatic scene 11,500 years ago near the area known today as North
Platte, Nebraska. A small group of Clovis hunters are suddenly
confronted by an enraged mammoth bull who seeks to protect his herd of
cows and their young. Armed with a stone-tipped compound spear and an
atlatl, the hunters prepare to defend themselves in the instant before
the attack. Original canvas painting commissioned by Mr. Ron Martin of
the Nebraska Archeology Society.

at the bottom of this page)

Ron inspects the art
and says, "It is very difficult for me to
convey how much I love this presentation.
You have caught the spirit of this scene in a way that very few
could have ever achieved." |
So far, prints have
been shipped to schools and private homes in California,
Nebraska, Missouri, Michigan, Connecticut, New York, Ohio,
Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Virginia, Louisiana,
Kentucky, Rhode Island, Maine, Massachusetts, and Colorado, as
well as to private collectors in Canada and the UK . Wow! I’ll
bet Mr. Mammoth (as the commissioner of the original painting
calls him) NEVER imagined he would travel so far, so fast...

TEACHERS,
HAVE YOUR STUDENTS STUDY THE PAINTING AND THEN OPEN UP A DISCUSSION!
Discussion Ideas
Who is separated from the herd, the mammoth or the lone hunter in the
background?
What is the STORY that is being told in the painting?
When you look closely at the
painting, you will see there is a herd of mammoth in the distance (on the
left), and a lone hunter in the distance (on the right). Discuss the
lone mammoth's reaction to the confrontation. Look at his eyes. Is
he frightened? Angry?
Discuss how the hunters work
as a team. What are the hunters feeling during the confrontation?
1. What clues in the
painting tell you about the location?
2. What clues tell you about
the time period?
3. What tools did the Clovis
culture use to create clothing and weapons?
4. What is flint knapping?
1. LOCATION
Clues are the background hills, the river, the vegetation,
the type of animals. Look up North Platte, Nebraska! Open your
eyes when you are outside, and ask yourself, what would give
someone clues about MY location if they saw a picture of where I
am standing?
2. TIME PERIOD
To discover the time
period, look at the tools being used: Clovis points and atlatl
(pronounced attle-attle), and study how they are put together. You can
discover more about the time period by knowing more about the mammoth
and the Clovis Culture. Clothing, creatures, and weapons can give you a
good hint about the time period.
|
3. TOOLS
If the Clovis culture didn't have stores to buy clothing and weapons,
they had to use what they could find...stones, bones, and leather from
the hides of creatures they hunted.
4. FLINT KNAPPING
Attend a "flint knapping" event in your area to learn LOTS more about
this interesting skill of shaping raw stone material into "points" by
slowly chipping away the edges. (The artist of this painting has
attended these events in Florida and even learned how to shape simple
points. She's not skilled at it, but any new skill takes lots of
practice! The fun part was TRYING something new that people have done
for thousands and thousands of years!) The vendors at knapping events
are willing to share their vast knowledge about the history and creation
of "points", and you can watch the flint knappers creating their own points or selling points. "Points" are spearheads, arrowheads, knifes, etc made
from stone by flint knapping.

FROM THE ARTIST:
LEARNING IS FUN! You can apply everything you learn at some point
in your life! When I was younger, little did I know I'd need algebra to
figure out the "rake" on a custom motorcycle, or know about mammoths to
create a historical painting, or know how to find words in a thesaurus
to write my book! I STILL love learning, and digging into new subjects
is like taking a trip to an exotic land...always a wondrous journey.
Thanks for visiting and Peaceful Journeys!
